Schwagstock 48 Lineup Guide

Schwagstock 48, a weekend campout concert experience, takes place July 26th and 27th 2019 at Pulaski County Shrine Park in Waynesville’s Buckhorn neighborhood. The family-friendly music festival lineup features 9 bands on Mid-Missouri’s largest outdoor stage including The Schwag and Aaron Kamm and the One Drops, and Jaik Willis. The Dancing Bear Tribe performance artists will inspire festivalgoers through their performance art.

Schwagstock 48 July 26 & 27

THE SCHWAG

The Schwag is a band of musicians dedicated to carrying on the vibe and music of the legendary Grateful Dead. Founded in 1991 The Schwag has performed over 3000 concerts all over the United States. This group averages 150 shows a year and has a working song list of over 200 songs from the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band catalog. For four years band leader Jimmy Tebeau also toured the country as the bass player for JGB (Jerry Garcia Band).

During last year’s Schwagstock 47 the band jammed their way through two high-energy set lists on Friday and Saturday nights. Both performances ended with encores that escalated the good vibes and left the crowd both wanting more and exhausted. As special guest Brody Buster’s harmonica dueled with Sean’s guitar and Jimmy’s bass everyone was on their feet reveling the uniqueness. Saturday night’s encore brought special guest Julian Davis’ mandolin to the mix. The Schwag does not disappoint. Don’t miss their sets during Schwagstock 48- or you might be kicking yourself.

AARON KAMM AND THE ONE DROPS

Hailing from St. Louis, MO, Aaron Kamm and the One Drops merge flavors of Roots Reggae, Mississippi River Blues, Improv-laced Jams, and Soulful Vocals. With their high-energy performance and unique sound, Aaron Kamm and the One Drops are a must see.

JAIK WILLIS

Jaik Willis is a strumming & drumming One Man Band, a wild fire-breathing freakshow; playing an 11 piece drum set with his feet while playing guitars / bass / & harps; while sing and beatboxing simultaneously, live with no looping or electronics. Performing 300 shows a year with appearances at Bonnaroo, Summer Camp Music Fest, Dunegrass, Schwagstock, the Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Fests etc. Jaik Willis got a shout out in Rolling Stone magazine for his vocal contribution to the Bassnectar album “FreeStyle” that debuted at #1 on iTunes.

THE DRIFTAWAYS

The Driftaways are a 7-piece Reggae/Rock band from the St. Louis area. The unique mix of classic Jamaican styles such as Ska, Reggae, Roots, and Dub with a Blues-Rock twist give The Driftaways their one-of-a-kind sound. Amazing stage presence, soulful vocals, and a refreshingly creative sound are quickly making The Driftaways one of the hottest Reggae acts in the Midwest.

THE KAY BROTHERS

California, Missouri brothers form a band saluting the music traditional to their homeland: The Ozarks… where Old-Time Fiddle music received a quick flash fry of foot stompin’ Country Blues as it made its way across the Mississippi River. The songs are a collection of stories, often ancient in verse but timeless in meaning, and delivered with sunny reverence for this forgotten music bred to uplift from the tangle of struggles in a bygone era. It’s music that prefers to draw you out, rather than draw you in.

In 2018, The Kay Brothers released their Self-Titled Debut Album and a companion video for their song, “Find Your Love,” recorded in an abandoned auto garage somewhere in Callaway County. Joined by Molly Healey and Roger Netherton on fiddles as well as “Shakin’ Jake” Allen on percussion, the Kay Brothers boast sibling harmonies, upright bass, guitar, tenor banjo, fiddle, harmonica, cello, washboard, congas, shakers, and an array of foot percussion. The mission: to preserve the rural music of our forefathers and mothers that used to fill the wooden barns that once dotted countryside on Saturday night and the small family churches on Sunday morning. That party is still going on…. it’s in your blood.

DRIFTERS MILE

Born from the Ozark Mountains, Drifters Mile plays, sings, and writes folk music in a Country and Bluegrass Style. Drifters Mile got started in the winter of ’09, as the band “Deep Fried Squirrel” four guys in a trailer out in a field playing an odd mix of bluegrass, rock and funk. They grew into a full-on grassrock band. Then, through a few line-up changes, some moving around of other members, they slimmed down to a five-piece string band ready to start a new wave.

3 SON GREEN

3 Son Green is a funk rock band that combines complex compositions with spontaneous improvisation. 3 songwriters and 3 singers give 3 Son Green a diverse sound, with tight rhythms and lush vocal harmony.

BONGOJAK VS THE LOOP MACHINE

Live Loops created by BongoJak Vs The Loop Machine. BongoJak is not limited to just percussion he also plays a variety of instruments including Guitar, Keyboard, Didgeridoo, Harmonica, Synth, Electric Drums, and almost anything he can get his hands on. He uses these instruments with a “Loop Machine” (a foot pedal recording device) to create full songs. His new all original mixed genre album “Rage Issue #1” has something for everyone to enjoy! BongoJak also plays a wide variety of cover tunes you know and love like Bob Marley, Grateful Dead, The Who, Bob Dylan and many more with a nice twist to each song. He also has several special guests at his shows from Hula-Hoopers to Juggling and sometimes adds other musicians as well. BongoJak vs the Loop Machine is more than just music it’s a SHOW!

BROTHER FRANCIS AND THE SOULTONES

Brother Francis and the Soultones is a band of friends who play music because it makes everyone happy. If it rocks, funks, or soothes the soul, the Soultones will be laying it down. Ryan Benthall, the Keyboardist/organist/vocals, is a graduate of UMSL’s music school and an accomplished player around town. Somewhere between Herbie Hancock and a mad romantic composer, Ryan adds a touch of class and ton of soul. Jacob Zengerling, Bassist/vocals, is a stylistic chameleon. A powerhouse when the moments right, or light as a feather if it brings it all together. Taylor Perkins, Drums, is a multi-instrumentalist with a knack for elevating those around him. His supportive, foundational playing easily moves in and out of different feels and textures. Brother Francis, Guitar/vocal, is an eccentric performer and talented songwriter. His songs come to life when the Soultones all begin to play. Fans have reported being immediately hypnotized by the pure joy radiating from the Soultones; creating an infectious experience that brings people to their feet.

Buckhorn Bluegrass Festival Lineup Guide

Buckhorn Bluegrass Festival (1)

Buckhorn BlueGrass Festival, billed as “Not Your Grandpa’s Bluegrass,” takes place August 30, 31, and September 1, 2019 at Pulaski County Shrine Park in Waynesville’s Buckhorn neighborhood. The family-friendly music festival lineup features 10 bands on 2 stages including Arkansauce and Opal Agafia & The Sweet Nothings.

Buckhorn BlueGrass Festival Flier

Arkansauce

Arkansauce is a genre-hopping, four-piece string band from Fayetteville, who bends the rules and blurs the lines between bluegrass, newgrass, folk, americana, country, blues, and funk. Although influenced by Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show, the foursome possesses a hard-driving sound that is uniquely theirs.

The band’s roots go back to 2011 when founding members Ethan Bush, Zac Archuleta, and Stephen Jolly began writing together after becoming acquainted through mutual connections in the close-knit Fayetteville music scene. After a couple of years building a repertoire of original music and releasing their first album (Hambone) as a trio, they were joined by Tom Andersen on the upright bass and Adams Collins on the five-string banjo. The road-tested chops Andersen and Collins brought to the table helped to cultivate the mature, well-rounded sound needed to accommodate their sophomore release “All Day Long.” Their third album, “If I Were You,” was released April 2017.

An Arkansauce show is riddled with improvisational guitar, banjo, and mandolin leads, paired with powerful harmonies and heart-felt songwriting, all held together by deep foot-stompin’ bass grooves. There’s an undeniably intimate connection between the band and their fans that’s contagious and leaves everyone in front of, and on the stage wanting more.

Opal Agafia & The Sweet Nothings

Opal Agafia & The Sweet Nothings is a Roots n Roll group from Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Lead vocalist and songwriter, Opal Agafia, entered the music scene in January of 2015. Shortly after playing in local joints with various musicians, Opal Agafia & The Sweet Nothings, developed into a full roots band. Together the group puts on a high energy show while focusing on soulful lyrics and instrumental combos. Spring 2016 saw the release their first album, “One Down, Forever To Go.” In 2018, Opal Agafia release her sophomore album, “Share What You Own.”

While still a college student, Opal Agafia began a songwriting collaboration with her mother, DeAnna Smith. Their songs reflect their deep roots on the Ozark Highlands, as well as their concerns for the current conditions and future of the region. They know their history, but they do not long for it so much as they explore how it influences the present and will influence the future. Their approach is both fresh and familiar.

Drawing from many genres, Opal Agafia & The Sweet Nothings blend the best elements of soul, gospel, blues, jazz, country, swing, and traditional mountain music into a sound that captures the past and boldly looks forward to what is coming next. Their fan base is an interesting and eclectic blend of folks who seem to find something that speaks to all of them in their particular diversities. Opal Agafia & the Sweet Nothings’ sound is fearlessly haunted by those who came before them, and they seek to add their spirit to new generations of listeners who come after them.

Chucky Waggs & The Company of Raggs

Chucky Waggs is a multi-instrumentalist, singer/ songwriter based out of the hills of Eureka Springs, AR. Chucky Waggs plays a mix of guitar, banjo, harmonica, and kazoo, all while using his feet to stomp out the back beat on a thrown together drum kit. Drawing influences from early American roots music, as well as early punk and rock and roll, he’s often joined on stage by numerous accompanying musicians to add to the energy and dynamic of his original material, as well as some early American folk songs. The result ranges from intimate, often humorous, folk ballads, to all out rowdy stomp-alongs.

Chucky Waggs (Charles Adam Wagner) got his musical start playing in basement punk rock bands. Drawn in by the D.I.Y. approach to the performances, as well as the energy and simplicity behind the music, he eventually found an appreciation for early American blues, and jugband songs, as well as early country, folk and bluegrass for ,what he sees, as a similar energy and simple natured approach.

Just Strangers

Hailing from the Wichita Mountains of Southwest Oklahoma, Just Strangers writes songs about the highway and worn hearts, mornings bright and early and the late night derelicts, train songs, songs about whiskey and wild women, songs about abandon and holding, songs about small town folk and homespun heart driven city rambling, some 1970’s yellowed polaroid, having nothing and wanting it all, maybe a tavern or a truck stop, something about bus stations and bowling alleys and discovering a jukebox.

Adam Johnson Band & The Dirty Strings

Adam Johnson has been playing live music to audiences all over Texas for the last 10 years. At 25 years old, Johnson has already independently released two albums worth of original material, played on some of the state’s most legendary stages and with some it’s most revered players. But that’s only the beginning for him.

“The Adam Johnson Band” is currently in the works on a third album and what looks to be Johnson’s most prolific to date. Pulling from his deep blues and roots influences, fans will be taken on a journey to the smoky, dank clubs that the band has cuts it teeth on for years. At the same time, the “songwriter” influences that appeared on “Part-Time Romance” (Johnson’s sophomore release) are explored further than ever before. Revealing truly original compositions, lush with soulful textures, haunting harmonies and guitar that will transport the listener back in time… And forward into the future!

When not working on their labor of love, the Adam Johnson Band can be seen in its natural environment, in front of a crowd of happy music lovers 5 to 7 nights a week.
